Journey 4

SDoH Rx

Course Progress

Summary

The conditions in which people grow up, learn, work, and play affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. These conditions, known as social determinants of health (SDoH), include substandard education, poverty, unstable housing, and other factors.

Unfavorable SDoH increases exposure to environmental hazards, unhealthy food choices, unsafe neighborhoods, and fewer economic opportunities

Seventy percent of health outcomes are determined by SDoH, so understanding SDoH and how they affect health outcomes is critical to improving health outcomes.

Learning Objectives

  • Improving access to, effects of, and the value of clinical health care services within the context of the SDoH.
  • Learning the impact of addressing “upstream” social determinants of health. Accumulating evidence highlights the individual and collective contributions of education, labor, criminal justice, transportation, economics, and social welfare to health.
  • Fostering health-promoting resources and reducing health-damaging risk factors throughout the life course.
